Symbolism: Azure (blue) is a reference to the etymology of the surname Waters. The Or (gold) barrulets are a reference to rivers and more generally to all running water. The swans are symbols of grace and majestic beauty and have a long history as a Royal animal in England. They are also a reference to the medieval tale of the Knight of the Swan or Swan Knight, about a mysterious rescuer who comes in a swan-drawn boat to defend a damsel, his only condition being that she must never ask his name. Water and swans are often considered feminine symbols and also refer to the gender of the bearer. The water bearing woman of the crest also holds a sword to represent the bearer’s interest in the European medieval martial arts.
